October 22, 2007

An inspired student at Merrimack College in Connecticut is working hard for Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October), with help from a batch of pink rubber ducks. Nichole Baldwin is selling these special ducks with plans to float them in the college library’s reflecting pool from October 22nd to November 1st.  Her goal is to sell and float 500 ducks.  She is selling the ducks for $1 each, numbering them, and writing the names of "Breast Cancer Heroes" on the ducks.  Explaining her terminology, Baldwin was quoted: “I don’t like to say a ‘cancer survivor’ or ‘someone who died of cancer,’”   All proceeds will go to the "Monica Cooper Children of Breast Cancer Fund" scholarship, which benefits children who have lost a parent to breast cancer.

Baldwin hopes the Mendel Pond pink duck float will become an annual event.  If you'd like to contact Nicole, you can email her at BaldwinN AT merrimack.edu.  Go, Nichole, go!
